What's left behind the scenes

  • The project was announced in April 2008 with Natalie Portman in the lead female role. Almost immediately, in May, she dropped out. A week later, John Maybury, who had been invited as director, signed Michael Fassbender and Abbie Cornish for the lead roles.
  • In May 2009, Peter Webber replaced John Maybury as director. Under his direction, Ed Westwick and Gemma Arterton were cast in the lead roles. Over the next six months, the project didn't progress, and in December 2009, Peter Webber also left the project.
  • In January 2010, Andrea Arnold was appointed as the new director, who initially planned to cast an actor from the Roma community as Heathcliff. However, British Roma communities reacted without enthusiasm to this idea. After that, an open casting call was directed at young people from Yorkshire aged 16 to 21 of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or Middle Eastern origin. James Howson, who ultimately got the role, was found in Leeds as a result of an open casting call held there in March.
  • Kaya Scodelario, who played Catherine Earnshaw in the film, was the youngest actress to take on this role among all the numerous adaptations of Emily Brontë's novel. All the actresses who had played her previously were at least in their twenties.
  • Casting for the children's roles was conducted in private schools among boys and girls with no prior acting experience.
  • After Natalie Portman left, Lindsay Lohan actively lobbied for the lead female role.
  • In the early stages of the project's development, Henry Cavill was among the candidates for the role of Heathcliff.
  • The canary in the film was borrowed for a time from Brian Keenan, a large Yorkshire breeder of these birds. This was due to Andrea Arnold's extreme punctuality regarding the maximum possible authenticity of the film. Therefore, the canary and its cage were preferably also from Yorkshire.
  • During the filming, the crew and actors lived in the famous The Kings Head hotel in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Its main building was built in 1717. The farewell party at the end of filming took place in the small pub The Old Board Inn in the town of House, located near the main filming location.
  • The administration of Dale Yorkshire National Park, located in the western part of North Yorkshire County, provided a large number of various historical items from its museum collection for use as props and scenery. These included ceramic and clay tableware, a baby cradle, knitting needles, special vessels for carrying milk on the farm, special shovels and wheelbarrows for digging and transporting peat, and culinary utensils for making homemade oatmeal cookies. All these items are usually exhibited at the local Dales Countryside Museum in the town of Hawes.
