In response to the film, McDonald's Corporation announced its decision to discontinue the Supersize portions – a trademark of the chain – from production and sale in the US by the end of 2004.
Morgan Spurlock filmed 250 hours of footage. Only approximately 0.66% of the filmed material made it into the final version of the film.
The idea for the film came to Morgan Spurlock when, after a Thanksgiving dinner at his parents' house, he saw a television report about two teenage girls suing McDonald's for gaining weight.
The waltz "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" played during the surgical operation is a reference to Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which Spurlock confirms in the DVD audio commentary, stating it is a “small homage to, possibly, his favorite American filmmaker.”
During filming, while eating only McDonald's, Spurlock gained over 11 kilograms in weight. It subsequently took him 13 months to lose that weight.
