Short description
When a lively young family moves in next door, grumpy widower Otto Anderson meets his match in a quick-witted, pregnant woman named Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one scene, Tom Hanks' face had to be digitally processed to 'rejuvenate' him and make him look about 35 years old. Footage and stills from Joe Dante's comedy thriller 'The 'Burbs' (1989) were used as a basis for this.
- In the film, they eat a pastry called "semla" in Swedish. This is a reference to the author of the original novel, although the pastry isn't mentioned there. Also, it's not something you’d easily find in Pittsburgh, where the film is set. In fact, in Sweden, "semla" is a seasonal food, mainly eaten between December and Easter, as it originates from the Christian tradition of treats before Lent.
