Short description
Jerry Maguire used to be a typical sports agent: willing to do just about anything he could to get the biggest possible contracts for his clients, plus a nice commission for himself. Then, one day, he suddenly has second thoughts about what he's really doing. When he voices these doubts, he ends up losing his job and all of his clients, save Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Cameron Crowe, he approved Zellweger because she was the only candidate for the role of Dorothy who definitely wouldn't flirt with Tom Cruise.
  • Renée Zellweger admitted that on the day she was cast in the film, she had been out of work for so long that she couldn't even withdraw money from her card because there wasn't enough in the account.
  • Writing the script took 3.5 years. When the script was finally ready and filming could begin, its author, Cameron Crowe, decided that Tom Hanks, who had been pre-selected for the lead role, was now too old for it.
  • The scene in which the characters played by Tom Cruise and Jonathan Lipnicki first talk in the living room was entirely improvised from beginning to end. Cameron Crowe deliberately didn't write dialogue for this scene, believing that improvisation would allow the actors to play more sincerely.
  • Tom Cruise later admitted that he had completely forgotten that Bonnie Hunt also starred in Barry Levinson's drama 'Rain Man' (1988). When Hunt told him they had worked together before, Cruise assumed she was joking.
  • It is believed that the film is based on the story of a real sports agent named Lee Steinberg. Steinberg appeared in an episodic role as the agent of football player Troy Aikman (which he actually was). A former partner of Steinberg poached his clients – both in reality and in the film.
  • According to Bonnie Hunt, the most difficult thing was playing a character that Tom Cruise didn't like.
  • Paula Abdul helped Cuba Gooding Jr. rehearse the dance.
  • The roles of Dorothy and Jerry were originally written for Winona Ryder and Tom Hanks. However, it turned out that Hanks was busy filming the comedy “That Thing You Do!” (Tom Hanks, 1996). Ryder could have participated in the project, but she and Tom Cruise looked like siblings on screen, and Renée Zellweger was cast instead.
  • Paula Abdul helped Cuba Gooding Jr. rehearse the dance.
