What's left behind the scenes

  • All scenes featuring Gary Dell'Abate were improvised.
  • Howard Stern's final monologue was allowed to be improvised and was filmed in one take.
  • Due to the controversial reputation of the lead actor and one of the screenwriters, Howard Stern, Mary McCormack initially declined the role. She only went to the audition because she wanted to meet director Betty Thomas. Upon learning that McCormack did not plan to work with her, Thomas advised the actress to listen to Stern's radio shows and meet him in person. McCormack liked the radio shows so much that she agreed to film.
  • According to Howard Stern, he did not learn his lines, being firmly convinced that he would come up with something on the fly, as he always did on the radio. However, producer Ivan Reitman took him aside and strongly recommended that he learn the lines.
  • Before filming began, the script was rewritten more than 25 times.
