Mickey Rourke seriously trained in martial arts to achieve the look he demonstrates in the film and to prepare for filming the fight scenes with Jean-Claude Van Damme's character.
The choreography for the fight scenes in the film was staged by Sammo Hung.
The original screenplay for the film was written by Don Jacoby and sold for around one to one and a half million dollars in July 1995. The plot unfolded on an island near the Greek coast, where exposed CIA agents could hide and prepare their revenge. Jean-Claude Van Damme liked the idea of the screenplay, but he claimed that little remained of the original script, and that the changes to the script made the film "somehow cartoonish."
A stunt double for Van Damme is visible in the scene with the tiger on the scaffolding.
At the 5-minute mark, when Van Damme's character is pushed into the pool by his wife, he is wearing moccasins, but they are gone when he falls into the pool.
