Short description
Martin Blank is a hitman for hire. When he starts to develop a conscience, he botches a couple of routine jobs. On the advice of his secretary and his psychiatrist, he decides to attend his ten-year high school reunion in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Debi says her apartment burned down on what is known as Devil's Night – the evening before Halloween, when the US (and especially Detroit) traditionally sees a peak in vandalism and arson.
  • In one version of the scene where Martin first enters Debi’s radio room, the actress playing the role (Debi), Minnie Driver, decided it would be better for her character to lay all her cards on the table and simply kiss Martin, played by John Cusack. According to the film's director, George Armitage, this was completely unexpected, and Cusack literally blossomed.
  • George Armitage originally intended to film the school scenes in a city school, but the school board did not allow it. They decided it would be inappropriate to portray one of the school's graduates as a killer.
  • Screenwriter Tom Yankewich (1963-2013) grew up in a small town in Michigan, and reflected friends from his own Catholic school childhood in the images of many characters.
  • Tom Yankewich wrote the screenplay in 1991, after receiving an invitation to his high school reunion decade. He came up with the title while working as a substitute teacher, and even wrote it on the blackboard to try to imagine how it would look on a cinema marquee.
