Short description
Affable hit man Melvin Smiley is constantly being scammed by his cutthroat colleagues in the life-ending business. So, when he and his fellow assassins kidnap the daughter of an electronics mogul, it's naturally Melvin who takes the fall when their prime score turns sour. That's because the girl is the goddaughter of the gang's ruthless crime boss. But, even while dodging bullets, Melvin has to keep his real job secret from his unsuspecting fiancée, Pam.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The script contained a fairly detailed backstory for Melvin, explaining why he tried so hard to please everyone and why he was orphaned. All of this had to be cut due to approaching deadlines and budget constraints.
  • The car chase scene in the forest was filmed in a park near Toronto in the Canadian province of Ontario. The filming took about two weeks, during which the park was closed to visitors.
  • Initially, it was planned to make Keiko (played by China Chow) a high school student – this would have been a reference to Asian high school girls in anime cartoons – but those in charge decided that this would be somewhat risky, and the heroine was made a college student.
  • The original script envisioned the guy from the video store as just a voice on the telephone, whose owner appears on screen only at the very end of the film, but when Danny Smith was cast in the role, it was decided to show him on screen earlier and shoot a few scenes with his character.
