According to the plot, Chow Yun-Fat discovers that Mark Wahlberg is working undercover in the bathroom. He was supposed to react to this by furiously smashing mirrors and knocking a hand dryer off the wall. It was decided that this reaction was too "American," and the scene was rewritten.
Director James Foley decided that the film needed a deliberately emphasized visual style with multicolored fluorescent lights, light flashes, and constantly moving handheld cameras, as he felt his recent films had been visually boring and formulaic, and he decided to "rediscover" himself as a director.
