Short description
Retired from active duty, and training recruits for the Impossible Mission Force, agent Ethan Hunt faces the toughest foe of his career: Owen Davian, an international broker of arms and information, who is as cunning as he is ruthless. Davian emerges to threaten Hunt and all that he holds dear -- including the woman Hunt loves.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The studio filming took place at Paramount Studios. For the previous 18 years, these soundstages had been used to film episodes of 'Star Trek'.
  • In early May 2004, news emerged that Tom Cruise (as the film's producer) had requested permission to film in the building of the German Parliament. Cruise wanted to use the 40-meter glass and steel dome of the Reichstag for the filming. However, the request was rejected by the Speaker of Parliament, Wolfgang Thierse. The Speaker responded as follows: 'The Reichstag building cannot be used for filming in any way, and we refuse to even discuss this matter further. This concerns the protection of the dignity of our parliament.'
  • Tom Cruise offered director Joe Carnahan to head the filming process after viewing his 2002 film 'Narc' (Cruise was an executive producer of that film). However, Joe was unable to find common ground with Tom, resulting in him leaving the project just a month before the scheduled start of filming (August 2004). His departure delayed the film's shooting by approximately a year, until a new director was found. Taking advantage of the delay, Tom decided to work with Steven Spielberg on 'War of the Worlds,' which was originally scheduled for release in 2006. Thus, a kind of swap occurred.
  • Carrie-Anne Moss was offered one of the key roles after Cruise reviewed the actress’s 2004 film 'Assassins.' However, after Carnahan's departure and Jeffrey Abrams taking the director's chair, Carrie-Anne's character was removed from the script.
  • Tandy Newton was offered the role of Nayah Nordoff-Hall, but the actress declined to participate in the project, preferring to spend time with her family. Later, this character was modified and transformed into Leia Quint, which Carrie-Anne Moss was supposed to play.
  • Cruise's first choice for the director's position was David Fincher, however, the latter preferred to choose another project – “Lords of Dogtown”. However, he didn't get that one either.
  • Kenneth Branagh could have played the role of the main villain.
  • Ricky Gervais was chosen for the role of Ethan Hunt's ally. Later, this role went to Simon Pegg.
  • Scarlett Johansson could have appeared in the film.
  • The scene of the "Lamborghini" explosion was filmed live, but the car's heart – its engine – was removed beforehand.
  • The two lead female roles in the film went to Michelle Monaghan and Kerry Russell, who were, coincidentally, born on the same day – March 23, 1976.
  • The interior of Ethan Hunt's house replicates the setting of J.J. Abrams' family home.
  • The scene of the "Lamborghini" explosion was filmed live, but the car’s heart – its engine – was removed beforehand.
