Before Kate Beckinsale was cast in the lead role, the part was initially intended for Olivia Wilde, and then Rosamund Pike. Callum Turner played the male lead in the film, although Logan Lerman and Miles Teller were previously considered for the role.
Work on the film continued for 12 years in various stages.
