Short description
Brought in to fix NASA’s public image, marketing maven Kelly Jones wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis's already difficult task of putting a man on the moon. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as back-up.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The beach scenes were filmed in late November, and a significant number of supporting actors had gloves and mittens hidden in their pockets, bags, etc., to warm their hands off-camera.
  • The film is set during the height of the space race between the USSR and the USA in the late 1960s. Men in supporting roles (typically NASA employees) walked around with their shirts tucked into their trousers. During filming, the shirts were constantly coming untucked and had to be tucked back in repeatedly. After filming, the actors signed thank-you cards to the costume designers for regularly tucking their shirts in.
  • The actors' lines in the press conference scene, where the Apollo 11 mission participants answer questions about the upcoming expedition, were taken verbatim from recordings of the astronauts' press conference held on July 5, 1969.
  • The story of Cole Davis (played by Channing Tatum) is based to some extent on the story of Deke Slayton. He was a pilot who fought in World War II, then joined NASA, was later sidelined from flights due to heart problems, but remained at NASA in administrative positions.
