Short description
The explorer craft USS Palomino is returning to Earth after a fruitless 18-month search for extra-terrestrial life when the crew comes upon a supposedly lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering near a black hole. The ship is controlled by Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his monstrous robot companion, but the initial wonderment and awe the Palomino crew feel for the ship and its resistance to the power of the black hole turn to horror as they uncover Reinhardt's plans.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the first film from Disney to receive a PG rating from the MPAA.
- For filming special effects, Disney initially intended to rent Dykstraflex, the first digital motion control system created for the filming of 'Star Wars: Episode IV' (George Lucas, 1977). The conditions set by Lucas's company, Industrial Light & Magic, proved unacceptable, and Disney developed its own Automated Camera Effects System, or ACES, which turned out to be much better than Dykstraflex.
- This was the last major effects-heavy project created directly at the studio. Now, they try to outsource all special effects to specialized companies.
