What's left behind the scenes

  • A loose adaptation of the story of Marc Dutroux, a criminal who operated in Belgium in the 1990s. Dutroux kidnapped, raped, and murdered several girls. Rivalry between law enforcement agencies and other factors led to a negligent investigation, a lenient sentence for the criminal, and, in turn, a large-scale protest that led to the reform of the entire law enforcement system.
  • The film's title is taken from "The Songs of Maldoror," a prose poem written in the second half of the 19th century by the French poet Lautréamont, although the film's action takes place in modern times. According to the film's director and screenwriter, Fabrice Du Welz, both the poem and the film explore the nature and spread of evil.
  • Director and screenwriter Fabrice Du Welz was 20 years old when the Dutroux case became widely known. He always wanted to make a film about Dutroux, but he couldn't figure out how to approach it. The solution came only when he watched Quentin Tarantino's drama "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (2019) and saw how Tarantino depicts the murder of Sharon Tate (1943-1969). Du Welz decided to make a film where reality borders on fiction, but where justice and fairness still exist as they should be (in contrast to the mockery of justice and fairness that exists in modern society).
