- The film is based on Jane Austen's novel “Emma” (Emma, 1815).
- The film had a 40-day shooting schedule. Producers sat in classrooms at Beverly Hills High School to get a feel for the student atmosphere. A real drama teacher at Beverly Hills High School played the principal in the film. Many scenes were filmed in Costa Mesa and Beverly Hills, with many scenes shot nearby in Scottsdale, Arizona. Scenes depicting the high school campus, including the tennis courts, outdoor cafeteria, courtyard, and various classrooms, were filmed at West College in Los Angeles.
- In the classroom scene, Alicia Silverstone genuinely didn't know how to pronounce the word “Haitians” correctly. Director Amy Heckerling forbade the crew from correcting the actress, because she wanted what Silverstone came up with to be included in the film.
- Alicia Silverstone was cast without an audition.
- Costume designer Mona May didn't want the girls to look like models, and only 63 costumes with a total cost of $200,000 were used in the film. The most expensive was a costume by Jean-Paul Gaultier, worn by Silverstone's character at the beginning of the film, which she took after filming (while all other costumes were donated to charity).
