What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Patrick McGrath from 1990.
  • According to Cronenberg, funding for the filming was very difficult to secure, and was found in France, however, the funds arrived so irregularly that the entire film crew ultimately went unpaid.
  • Director David Cronenberg received a script from Patrick McGrath, completely unexpectedly. A note was attached to the script stating that Ralph Fiennes had expressed interest in the lead role. After reading approximately four pages, Cronenberg realized he wanted to make a film based on the script.
  • One source of inspiration for Cronenberg was the figure of French and Irish writer, poet, and playwright Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). His portraits were hung all over the set, and Fiennes was even given a hairstyle reminiscent of Beckett's.
  • The protagonist's difficulties with his family history are explained by the so-called Capgras syndrome (also known as the delusion of doubles). This is a psychopathological disorder in which the patient is convinced that someone in their environment has been replaced by a doppelganger.
