- Initially, it was assumed that Arnold Schwarzenegger would reprise his role as Conan in this film, as Red Sonja appeared in the novels about this hero. Ultimately, a new character named Kalidor was created for the film, who was practically indistinguishable from Conan.
- In the film "Conan the Barbarian," Sandahl Bergman played Conan's lover, Valeria. She was initially offered the lead role in "Red Sonja," but the idea was later abandoned, and she was given the role of the villainess Gedren instead.
- It took the filmmakers a year to find an actress who possessed a sufficiently "Amazonian" appearance for the lead role. They were still searching eight weeks before the start of filming, but then they came across photos of Brigitte Nielsen in a magazine.
- Studio filming of the film took place in Italy, at the Pontini Studios, while location shooting was done in the Italian region of Abruzzo.
