What's left behind the scenes

  • Not all filming took place on historic racetracks, especially since some of the old tracks no longer exist. However, the filmmakers, striving to recreate a picture as close to documentary as possible, used old footage from archival chronicles in combination with material newly filmed on English tracks in Snetterton, Donington Park, Brands Hatch, Caldwell Park, and at Blackbush airfield. Specifically, special sets were built at the airfield to recreate the start-finish straight of the Brazilian Interlagos and the South African Kyalami racetrack.
  • Historic Formula One managed to assemble a starting grid of 24 original cars from 1976 by persuading their current owners to cooperate with the film crew.
  • Following the rehearsal and preparatory period, the film crew began principal photography on February 22nd. The majority of filming took place in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria, on the grounds of Cadwell Park, Brands Hatch, and the Nürburgring racetracks. The former Blackbush airfield served as one of the main filming locations.
  • During filming, the crew had access to both original Formula 1 team vehicles and their working replicas. The filmmakers also consulted with current drivers and team principals.
  • Replicas of Hesketh, Brabham, Ferrari, BRM, Penske and March cars were built by various British companies specializing in the restoration of historic racing cars. Each cost approximately £70,000-£100,000. Instead of authentic Cosworth DFV engines, more common Rover V8 engines were used as power units. These cars are now in storage, but may be sold at auction to partially offset the film's production costs.
  • The unique six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 Formula 1 car can be seen during the race starts in the film.
  • Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth were not allowed to drive real Formula 1 cars. They had to use Formula 3 cars with Formula 1 bodies.
  • During filming, Daniel Brühl wore a special device to simulate Niki Lauda's bite.
  • Chris Hemsworth lost 14 kg for the role of James Hunt. Before that, he weighed 98 kg, which he had gained for the role of Thor.
  • Bernie Ecclestone played a cameo role in the film. He can be seen near the finish line at the 1975 United States Grand Prix.
  • The scene of Lauda's first Formula 1 tests, which according to the plot takes place in France at the Paul Ricard circuit, was filmed on the start straight of the Brands Hatch circuit in Britain.
  • To recreate the scene of Niki Lauda's accident on the "Nordschleife", modern digital technologies had to be used: contemporary footage was shot in the same corner of the old Nürburgring, and 3D scans of the real 1976 Ferrari 312T2 were utilized.
  • Hunt died in 1993 at the age of 45 from a heart attack at his home in Wimbledon, just hours after proposing to Helen Dyson – a waitress he met in the winter of 1989 and with whom he had been in a romantic relationship ever since.
  • Ron Howard stated that he did not use original footage of Niki Lauda's crash at the Nürburgring, but filmed the scene at the same corner of the race track.
  • During the scenes of the Grand Prix on the Nürburgring track, shortly after the start, the cars drive along a part of the track that wasn't built until 1984.
  • Throughout the film, all OMP racing suits feature a new logo that only appeared in 2012.
  • In the first aerial shot of Vienna, a modern van can be seen driving across the bridge in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • In the plane, when James Hunt pays attention to the flight attendant, the first-class seats of Lufthansa are shown. Such seats only appeared in 2001.
  • The HS 125 aircraft, on which Hunt and his friends fly towards the end of the film, only appeared in 1978, two years after the events of the film.
  • During the 1970 Formula 3 race scene, a yellow Renault 5 can be seen in the background. This model only appeared in 1972.
  • In the scene where Lauda drives through the Italian countryside, he overtakes a third-series Alfa Romeo Spider. This car design only appeared in 1978, while the events in this scene take place in 1975.
  • During the 1976 British Grand Prix scene, the McLaren team has a Mark 2 vehicle at the pit stop, which only appeared in 1978.
  • When Khant receives a call on his landline, instead of the electronic ringtone, he hears a bell chime, which is unusual for this model.
  • In the scene showing the view from inside a running engine, a spark plug is missing from the cylinder head.
  • When Alexander tells James that there is no money to participate in the next season, James leans back on the sofa at the end of the conversation. In the first shot, his shirt sleeves are rolled up below the elbows, and immediately after a camera angle change, they are rolled up above the elbows.
  • The scene of Lauda's first tests in Formula 1, which according to the plot takes place in France at the Paul Ricard circuit, was filmed on the start straight of the British Brands Hatch circuit.
