Short description
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The second of a two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Glinda’s purple dress is a reference to the dress worn by this character as performed by Billie Burke in Victor Fleming’s adventure musical "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) and Glinda's dress in the stage production of "Wicked."
  • Dorothy’s face is never shown in the film. Director John M. Chu believed that no one could do as well as Judy Garland in the role, and that this wasn’t a film about her at all, but rather the story of Elphaba and Glinda (played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, respectively). Garland played Dorothy in Victor Fleming and King Vidor’s classic musical "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).
  • The final scene references the famous poster for the Broadway production of "Wicked," which depicts Ariana Grande as Glinda whispering something in Cynthia Erivo’s ear as Elphaba.
  • The original musical shows how Marissa Bode's character is given the ability to walk because Elphaba enchanted her silver slippers. In this adaptation of the story for the screen, this character does not walk, but floats in the air (in reality, the actress is unable to move independently).
