Short description

Apartment building superintendent Cleveland Heep rescues what he thinks is a young woman from the pool he maintains. When he discovers that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the journey back to her home, he works with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world.

What's left behind the scenes

The film was originally intended to be made at Disney Studios, but M. Night Shyamalan was unable to reach an agreement with the studio executives regarding his next project. After Shyamalan left Disney, where his four previous films had been made, Warner Brothers agreed to finance the film.
It took eight weeks to build the set for the apartment complex shown in the film.
The film's plot is based on a fairy tale that Shyamalan wrote for his children.
Kevin Costner was considered for the role of Hip.
Shyamalan was very impressed with Cindy Chung's audition for the role of Yang-Sun Cho, but he was shocked to learn that her agent requested a fee of $1 million. Night was going to pay Cindy $65,000. In the end, they settled on $100,000.
At the request of M. Night Shyamalan, the sets for the film had to be built within a 45-minute drive of his home.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was considered for one of the roles in the film. He liked the script, but he was unable to participate in the film due to commitments to other projects.
William Hurt, Sidney Poitier, Chris Cooper, Gene Wilder, Terrence Howard, Alec Baldwin, Vince Vaughn, Forest Whitaker, and Don Cheadle were considered for supporting roles in the film.
