Michael Fassbender, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Russell Crowe were considered for the lead role.
Darren Aronofsky was initially credited as the film's director, but was later replaced by Brazilian director José Padilha.
Hugh Laurie negotiated for the role of Raymond Sellars, but the negotiations fell through. Clive Owen was seriously considered as Laurie's replacement, but Michael Keaton was ultimately chosen.

When Sellars reviews the robot suit design draft, it becomes clear that it is a suit from the film "RoboCop" (1987).
The preserved hand is a reference to the first RoboCop film. During the creation of the robot police officer, the hand is shown to project leader Bob Morton, who remarks to his colleagues: "Why did you leave the hand? We talked about a full body prosthesis."
To promote the film, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and Sony Pictures created a pseudo-official website for the non-existent OmniCorp in 2012. The site featured an OmniCorp promotional video, recordings of fictional news reports about unrest in American cities, a description of two of its products (an unmanned aircraft and the ED-209 robot), and an announcement of the RC-2000 cyborg. A pseudo-official Facebook profile was also created, featuring the same video and other photographs of the ED-209 robot (including its older model with its creator) and the RC-2000.
Production designer Martin Whist was responsible for the film's futuristic design. When working on RoboCop's motorcycle, Whist based it on a Kawasaki Z1000, then made radical changes to the model.
Joshua Zetumer wrote the screenplay for the film based on an unfinished draft by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, which was written in 1985 at the request of director Paul Verhoeven, but subsequently rejected by him.
When Alex fails his initial combat tests, the character Jackie Earl Haley says, "I wouldn't buy that for a dollar." The original film repeatedly shows a televised entertainment program where the host shouts, "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
