More than a hundred boys auditioned for the role of Alex Pruitt. Alex Linz won the role, even beating out a star like Elijah Wood. Previously, Wood auditioned for the role of Sammy Parker in "One Fine Day" (1996), and Linz landed that role as well.
Unlike the first two parts, as well as the fourth, this installment takes place after Christmas.
At an early stage of development, the film was planned as a pilot for a television series.
