- The director didn't tell the actors it would be a musical until they signed the contract.
- Woody Allen asked Goldie Hawn to sing poorly, so it would seem like she was singing for the first time.
- Woody Allen wanted the voices in the film to sound as natural as possible, so all the actors sang themselves, with the exception of Drew Barrymore: she convinced the director of her complete inability to sing. Olivia Hayman sings for Drew Barrymore in the film.
- Drew Barrymore wears a wig in the film, as her own hair was purple at the time of filming.
- Kim Rossi Stuart, Tracey Ullman, and Liv Tyler also appeared in the film, but all scenes with them were cut by Allen during editing.
- Woody Allen made a number of references to the films of the Marx Brothers. Besides the Christmas party in the guise of famous comedians in the film's finale, this includes the French song “Hooray for Captain Spaulding” from the brothers’ film “The Thieves and Hunters,” Edward Norton’s dance number mimicking Groucho Marx’s dance from the same film, and the song “You Brought a New Kind of Love To Me” from the film “Monkey Business.” The film's title is also a line from a song featured in the same comedy group's film “Horse Feathers.”
- Woody Allen made numerous references to the Marx Brothers’ films. Besides the Christmas party featuring impersonations of the famous comedians at the film’s finale, there’s the French song “Hooray for Captain Spaulding” from the Marx Brothers’ “Duck Soup,” Edward Norton’s dance number mimicking Groucho Marx’s dance from the same film, and the song “You Brought a New Kind of Love To Me” from “Monkey Business.” The film’s title is also a line from a song featured in the Marx Brothers’ “A Horse’s Neck.”
