What's left behind the scenes
- It took almost 10 years to make the film. One of the early script versions featured a Scottish couple, who turned out to be disguised aliens. Brad Pitt was considered for the role of the husband in this couple.
- When Laura walks down the street, a reflection of a crew member in a high-visibility vest can be seen, helping the camera follow the heroine.
- The men that Scarlett Johansson's character lures into the van were not actors. Jonathan Glazer installed hidden cameras in the van and told the men they were in a film after the scenes had been shot.
- Director and screenwriter Jonathan Glazer did not want to use makeup to portray an actor with neurofibromatosis. Adam Pearson was cast after contacting a relevant charity. Pearson's own ideas about how Scarlett Johansson's character would seduce him were incorporated into the plot.
- Due to the dangers of driving on the roads of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, Jeremy McWilliams, a motorcycle racing champion, was cast in the role of the motorcyclist.
