Short description
Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. A deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Japanese businessman Koji Yanai invited Wim Wenders to Japan to create a series of promotional videos about the redesign of public toilets in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, carried out by designers from different countries. The director was so impressed with what he saw that he suggested to Yanai to shoot a feature film instead of the videos.
  • Filming took only 17 days.
  • The film's screenplay was written in three weeks.
  • The first Japanese film nominated by Japan for the 'Oscar' award in the 'Best International Feature Film' category, directed by a non-Japanese filmmaker.
  • According to Wim Wenders, the main character Hirayama's name is a reference to Yasujiro Ozu's last film, 'An Autumn Afternoon,' whose main character is also named Hirayama.
  • The first Japanese film submitted by Japan for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, directed by a non-Japanese filmmaker.
  • According to Wim Wenders, the name of the main character, Hirayama, is a reference to Yasujiro Ozu's final film, "An Autumn Afternoon," whose protagonist is also named Hirayama.
