Humbert Humbert is a middle-aged British novelist who is both appalled by and attracted to the vulgarity of American culture. When he comes to stay at the boarding house run by Charlotte Haze, he soon becomes obsessed with Lolita, the woman's teenaged daughter.
What's left behind the scenes
- Natalie Portman also auditioned for the role of Lolita, but she declined because her parents were against it, and she herself wasn't keen on "kissing an old man".
- Over 2,500 actresses auditioned for the role of Lolita, including Christina Ricci and Melissa Joan Hart.
- Dustin Hoffman could have played Humbert.
- Gerald Depardieu could have played Quilty.
- During joint scenes between Dominique Swain and Jeremy Irons, an inconspicuous pillow was always placed between them. And in intimate scenes, the actress was replaced by a body double.
- In Australia, the film was initially hesitant to release – due to the danger of a potential surge in pedophilia. It was released in 1999, with a strict R rating.
