What's left behind the scenes

  • The opening credits are drawn against the background of photographs with a certain mutation. These are by no means nuclear cataclysms, but the consequences of Agent Orange—a chemical substance used by US troops in Vietnam to destroy crops, thickets, and forests.
  • In order for the film to receive an R rating, it had to be cut by 2 minutes.
  • The images of mutants were created using both CGI technology and makeup. The most disproportionate characters were sculpted from prosthetics.
  • Filming took place in Morocco and involved people of 61 nationalities.
  • A gas station was constructed on the filming location in Morocco. It looked so realistic that locals regularly drove up to it to refuel their cars.
  • Almost all of Ted Levine’s lines and actions were improvised.
  • Aleksandr Adja and art director Gregory Levasser had planned from the beginning to film in Morocco due to the similarity of the natural conditions to the New Mexico desert. However, the producers opposed this, fearing terrorist attacks. After Adja and Levasser were unable to find a suitable location in the US, the producers relented.
  • During filming in the Moroccan desert, the temperature sometimes exceeded 48 degrees Celsius.
  • Filming in a tiny trailer was very difficult, so they had to build separate sets representing the interior of the vehicle. The sets turned out to be 30% larger than the original.
  • Ivanna Turchetto (who played Big Mama) agreed to shave her head for $1000.
  • One of the producers, Peter Locke, played the role of a mutant in the original version of the film (1977).
  • The nuclear crater that Doug finds is entirely computer-generated.
  • The TV show that Big Mama watches is called 'Divorce Court'. Peter Locke is also the producer of that show.
  • One of the most challenging scenes to stage was the trailer crash in the desert. It took 3 days to film.
  • Wes Craven and Peter Lock intended to shoot in the same desert where the original 1977 film was made. But when they went there to scout locations, they discovered that the area had been developed.
  • The new 'The Hills Have Eyes' is approximately 15 minutes longer than its predecessor.
  • The opening credits are drawn against a backdrop of photographs with some kind of mutation. These are by no means nuclear cataclysms, but the consequences of Agent Orange – a chemical substance used by US troops in Vietnam to destroy crops, thickets, and forests.
