Director Thomas Carter cast Julia Stiles as Sarah after seeing her dance on a table in the melodrama '10 Things I Hate About You' (Gil Junger, 1999).
The audition scene at the beginning of the film was shot at the Athenaeum Theatre museum in Chicago.
The scene of the first dance rehearsal in the school cafeteria was completely improvised.
According to early script drafts, Sarah lived with her mother in Pennsylvania before moving to Baltimore to live with her father. By the time of filming, the locations had changed to Illinois and Chicago, respectively.
