The film featured the D/S Hestmanden vessel, built in 1911 and restored to working condition. This vessel participated in naval convoys during both World War I and World War II, after which it became a museum exhibit.
The film is set in the summer of 1942, when the Arctic convoy PQ-17 was dispatched. Out of the 41 ships that left the shores of Iceland, three returned to their port of departure, and 24 were sunk. 10 merchant ships (one British, six American, one Panamanian, and two Soviet) and 4 auxiliary ships reached Arkhangelsk. They transported 70,000 tons of cargo out of the 200,000 tons sent from Iceland. A total of 14 ships under the American flag were sunk.
