What's left behind the scenes

  • Ewan McGregor's character is watching the film "The Wicker Man" (1973) on television.
  • The film's budget was so small that various props had to be auctioned off to buy film stock for the cameras.
  • The budget was 1 million pounds sterling, and most of it was spent on building the apartment set.
  • According to Danny Boyle, Christopher Eccleston was so afraid of the morgue scene where he is locked in (a real morgue was used), they had to ask someone on set to stand near the actor without being in the frame.
  • When a car fell into the flooded quarry, everything was arranged so that the car would surface after filming the scene, allowing it to be pulled out of the water. Something went wrong, and the car never surfaced. Danny Boyle believes it is still down there.
  • According to Danny Boyle, the lead actors in the film specifically studied the professions of their characters. Ewan McGregor worked in a newsroom, Christopher Eccleston – in an accounting firm, and Kerry Fox – in a hospital during the night shift.
  • At Danny Boyle's insistence, McGregor, Eccleston, and Fox lived together for a week before filming began to get used to each other. Eccleston later wrote that the only thing they all got out of it was that they didn't like each other.
  • In the scene where Hugo's dead body is shown in close-up, you can see the actor's artery pulsing in his neck.
