What's left behind the scenes

  • The painting "Bride of the Wind," located in the Kunstmuseum Basel, was removed from exhibition for the film's production to allow for analysis of its various layers and to determine the sequence in which they were painted.
  • Dieter Berner spent two years searching for a suitable actor for the role of Oskar Kokoschka. Valentin Postlmayr was invited to audition after the director saw him perform Romeo in a production of "Romeo and Juliet."
  • Jakub Beinarowicz shot the film with various cameras: there are scenes from Alma's perspective, shot with a digital camera, and scenes from Oskar's perspective, shot with an analog camera. Different optics were used – spherical on one hand, and anamorphic on the other.
  • In the scene where Oskar first paints Alma, she talks about "The Tales of Hoffmann" and asks if she should be his doll Olympia. He responds affirmatively. At the end of the film, he recreates Alma as a doll.
