The cartoon is based on a series of stories by Yves Titus, "Basil of Baker Street" (1958-1982).
Fidget periodically loses either his right or left leg.
The clock tower scene utilizes rotoscoping animation. The backgrounds for this scene were computer-calculated and output to paper using a plotter (this is demonstrated in the film's supplemental materials). This wasn't the first use of computer graphics by Disney studios, as it had previously been used in the film 'Tron' (1982) and the animated feature 'The Black Cauldron' (1985).
The animated film is based on the series of stories 'Basil of Baker Street' by Eve Titus (1958-1982).
