The film is based on the novel "Blood and Chocolate" by Annette Curtis Klause (1997).
Since 1997, when the idea of adapting the novel first arose, directors Larry Williams and his wife Leslie Libman, Po-Chien Leong, Sandji Senaka, and Rupert Wainwright were considered for the project. Katia von Garnier signed on to direct the film in January 2005.
Filming took place in Bucharest, in part because Katia von Garnier wanted to film real wild wolves, which still live in Romanian forests, rather than computer-generated virtual models.
The first draft of the script was written by Christopher Landon, whose father Michael Landon starred in the film "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957).
