What's left behind the scenes

  • Sean Penn initially turned down the offer to star in the film due to being overcommitted to other projects. The role of Bobby Cooper went to Bill Paxton. However, just a week after filming began, Bill dropped out of the project. Fortunately for the producers, Penn's schedule became available, and he was able to star in the film.
  • The town where the film takes place is real. "The Prophecy" (1995) was also filmed there.
  • Specifically for the role in this film, Billy Bob Thornton gained 50 pounds (approximately 22.6 kilograms).
  • The role of Grace was originally intended for Sharon Stone, but the actress was not satisfied with the fee and refused to star in the film.
  • Tom Savini was originally slated to play Biker No. 2, but he was unable to do so due to commitments to other projects.
  • When Oliver Stone was asked why he made this film, he replied that he always wanted to make a movie he would enjoy watching if he were a teenager.
  • In Grace's (Jennifer Lopez) flashback scenes, many childhood photos can be seen. These are genuine childhood photographs of Jennifer.
  • Oliver Stone initially intended to give the role of the blind old man to Marlon Brando.
  • The film is partially based on real events that occurred in the early 1980s with a traveler who stopped in a remote small town and went missing.
