Sean Penn initially turned down the offer to star in the film due to being overcommitted to other projects. The role of Bobby Cooper went to Bill Paxton. However, just a week after filming began, Bill dropped out of the project. Fortunately for the producers, Penn's schedule became available, and he was able to star in the film.
The town where the film takes place is real. "The Prophecy" (1995) was also filmed there.
Specifically for the role in this film, Billy Bob Thornton gained 50 pounds (approximately 22.6 kilograms).
The role of Grace was originally intended for Sharon Stone, but the actress was not satisfied with the fee and refused to star in the film.
Tom Savini was originally slated to play Biker No. 2, but he was unable to do so due to commitments to other projects.
