When Frank meets a girl on a dating site, she says she pictured him as overweight, with long black hair and problem skin. This is exactly how the protagonist of the original film looked.

All of Elijah Wood's lines were written during post-production, however, the actor was present on set from beginning to end, even when he wasn't in the frame. During filming, he simply stood behind the camera operator.
