The film is based on the real battle for Hill 937.
At the end of the film there is a scene in which a soldier, with his face hidden by bandages, reaches out to his comrades who run past him. This scene references a famous photograph taken at the 'Hamburger Hill' position.
An electrician died of an electric shock right before the eyes of the film crew and actors. The project nearly ended because of this, but it was still continued after a properly organized funeral.
Dylan McDermott lost 11 kg (24 lbs) during filming.
The characters in the film are named after screenwriter James Carabatsos's fellow soldiers.
