In 2000, the American Film Institute ranked the film 82nd on its list of the 100 funniest comedies of all time.
According to Goldie Hawn's memoirs, Arthur Hiller was the studio's first choice for director, but he left the project at a very early stage of production.
Penelope Spheeris was offered the director's position for the film.
Eileen Brennan and Hal Williams reprised their roles in the 1981-1983 television series based on the film. Damita Jo Freeman also appeared in the series, but her character had a different name despite the physical resemblance.
The film's poster and other promotional materials parody the classic film "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930).
Actress P. J. Soles attended the audition wearing a wig, as the producers did not want another blonde among the film's cast.
