Several weeks before filming began, Baltasar Getty fell from a tree and broke both wrists. Despite such a serious injury, the director insisted on his casting and even decided to incorporate it into the script, with a significant portion of the film featuring his character with his arm bandaged while the actor's fracture healed.
Chris Furrh also starred in another film that same year about a group of teenagers stranded on a deserted island. It was the television drama 'Exile' (1990).
In William Golding's book and the earlier 1963 adaptation, the boys were British, but here they become students at an American military school and belong to different racial and ethnic groups.
Filming took place in August – September 1988 in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Jamaica.
