Short description
David Callaway tries to piece together his life in the wake of his wife's suicide and has been left to raise his nine-year-old daughter, Emily on his own. David is at first amused to discover that Emily has created an imaginary friend named 'Charlie', but it isn't long before 'Charlie' develops a sinister and violent side, and as David struggles with his daughter's growing emotional problems, he comes to the frightening realisation that 'Charlie' isn't just a figment of Emily's imagination.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film has four alternate endings, and in half of the cinemas it was shown with the original ending, while in the other half – with an alternate one.
  • For the first time in 70 years, 20th Century Fox sent copies of the film to cinemas without a reel containing the final part, which was sent separately. This was done as a precaution to prevent anyone from revealing the ending prematurely. Security guards from the film company personally delivered the copies to the cinemas, and all reels at the company were numbered to eliminate even the possibility of spoilers.
  • Famke Janssen is right-handed. In the film, she holds the gun in her left hand to make it look awkward and clumsy, as the plot dictates she has never held a weapon before.
  • Dakota Fanning chose not to dye her hair auburn for the role and filmed wearing a wig.
  • Auditions were held for the role of Emily, and according to director Jon Polson, he hoped to find a “new Dakota Fanning.” AnnaSophia Robb was among those who auditioned, but the role ultimately went to Fanning.
  • The film crew as a whole, and the props department in particular, went to great lengths to avoid harming the beetle. In the fishing scene, Emily picks up the insect and puts it on the hook. For this scene, the props department specifically made an artificial beetle, but the director found it unnatural. A total of 24 beetles were brought in for the shoot. A live insect was used for the beginning of this scene, carefully attaching a fake pouch with blood and innards to its body with surgical glue. Fanning was specifically shown how to handle the insect and where to insert the hook so as not to harm it. This was done in accordance with the requirements of the American Humane Association.
