Short description
Chris, a former tennis player, looks for work as an instructor. He meets Tom Hewett, a wealthy young man whose sister Chloe fall in love with Chris. But Chris has his eye on Tom's fiancee Nola.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Woody Allen's first film shot entirely in Britain from beginning to end.
  • Kate Winslet was initially cast as Nola Rice, but she turned down the role, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. And, considering the film was shot in Britain, Woody Allen had to recruit a certain percentage of the cast and crew from England. He obviously met the necessary "British" quota before Winslet was cast, and therefore, after she declined to participate, Woody confidently entrusted the role of Nola to American actress Scarlett Johansson.
  • The painting on the wall depicting a girl with a red balloon, past whom Chris walks, was painted by Banksy – a graffiti artist from Bristol.
  • Memorable concert recordings are featured several times in the film, including during the opening and closing credits. This is "Unfurl the Flag" performed by Enrico Caruso from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "The Elixir of Love".
  • The film features music by Georges Bizet, Gaetano Donizetti, Giuseppe Verdi, Gioachino Rossini, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Carlos Gomes.
  • Woody Allen cast Toby Kebbell in the film without an audition, impressed by his performance in "Dead Man's Shoes".
  • The musical featured in the film is Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Woman in White".
  • At the beginning of the film, Chris Wilton is reading Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment", and shortly after meeting Nola Rice – August Strindberg.
  • In one scene of the film, the characters go to a cinema to watch Walter Salles' "The Motorcycle Diaries" about the young Che Guevara.
  • The plot of the film echoes the plot of Theodore Dreiser's novel "An American Tragedy" (1925).
  • Kate Winslet was initially cast in the role of Nola Rice, but she declined, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Also, considering the film was shot in Britain, Woody Allen had to cast a certain percentage of the actors and artistic crew from England. He clearly met the required 'British' quota before Winslet was cast, and therefore, after her withdrawal from the project, Woody without hesitation entrusted the role of Nola to American actress Scarlett Johansson.
  • Memorable concert recordings are featured several times in the film, including during the opening and closing credits. This is "Una furtiva lagrima" performed by Enrico Caruso from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "L'elisir d'amore".
  • Woody Allen invited Toby Kebbell to the film without an audition, impressed by his performance in "Dead Man's Shoes".
  • The musical being watched in the film is Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Woman in White".
  • In one scene of the film, the characters go to a cinema to watch Walter Salles's "Che Guevara: The Motorcycle Diaries" about the young Che Guevara.
