Short description
The Newton family live in their comfortable home, but there seems to something missing. This "hole" is filled by a small puppy, who walks into their home and their lives. Beethoven, as he is named, grows into a giant of a dog... a St Bernard. Doctor Varnick, the local vet has a secret and horrible sideline, which requires lots of dogs for experiments. Beethoven is on the bad doctor's list.
What's left behind the scenes
- Screenwriter John Hughes is credited as Edmond Dantès. This author's pseudonym is a tribute and a sign of respect to Alexandre Dumas' classic novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo," and its protagonist.
- Steve Rash was originally slated to direct the film, but he left the project shortly after filming began.
- The dog used in the film as Beethoven was trained by Eleanor Keaton, the widow of the famous actor Buster Keaton.
- The American Veterinary Association was so outraged that the main villain and organizer of the dog-napping gang turned out to be a veterinarian, that they sent a furious letter of protest to Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
- Filming took place from May 1 to July 26, 1991.
- The dog used in the film as Beethoven was trained by Eleanor Keaton, the widow of the famous actor Buster Keaton.
