Screenwriter John Hughes is credited as Edmond Dantès. This author's pseudonym is a tribute and a sign of respect to Alexandre Dumas' classic novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo," and its protagonist.
Steve Rash was originally slated to direct the film, but he left the project shortly after filming began.
The dog used in the film as Beethoven was trained by Eleanor Keaton, the widow of the famous actor Buster Keaton.
The American Veterinary Association was so outraged that the main villain and organizer of the dog-napping gang turned out to be a veterinarian, that they sent a furious letter of protest to Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
Filming took place from May 1 to July 26, 1991.
