What's left behind the scenes

  • Screenwriter John Hughes is credited as Edmond Dantès. This author's pseudonym is a tribute and a sign of respect to Alexandre Dumas' classic novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo," and its protagonist.
  • Steve Rash was originally slated to direct the film, but he left the project shortly after filming began.
  • The dog used in the film as Beethoven was trained by Eleanor Keaton, the widow of the famous actor Buster Keaton.
  • The American Veterinary Association was so outraged that the main villain and organizer of the dog-napping gang turned out to be a veterinarian, that they sent a furious letter of protest to Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
