Short description

Against formidable odds -- and an old-school diving instructor embittered by the U.S. Navy's new, less prejudicial policies -- Carl Brashear sets his sights on becoming the Navy's first African-American master diver in this uplifting true story. Their relationship starts out on the rocks, but fate ultimately conspires to bring the men together into a setting of mutual respect, triumph and honor.

What's left behind the scenes

The film's title can be literally translated as "People of Honor".
The only one who supported the main character from the very beginning was diver Alberto Jose de Nascimento from Brazil, but this character was not included in the film's plot.
The film was made with the blessing and full support of the US Navy.
Billy Sunday, played by Robert De Niro, is based on two real people from the life of Carl Brashear.
Carl Brashear (1931-2006) joined the Navy in 1948. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the Navy diving school specializing as a rescue diver. He became the first US Navy military diver to be fully and unconditionally restored to duty after the amputation of a leg as a result of an injury sustained during one of the rescue operations. Brashear retired on April 1, 1979, after 31 years of service.
