What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title can be literally translated as "People of Honor".
  • The only one who supported the main character from the very beginning was diver Alberto Jose de Nascimento from Brazil, but this character was not included in the film's plot.
  • The film was made with the blessing and full support of the US Navy.
  • Billy Sunday, played by Robert De Niro, is based on two real people from the life of Carl Brashear.
  • Carl Brashear (1931-2006) joined the Navy in 1948. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the Navy diving school specializing as a rescue diver. He became the first US Navy military diver to be fully and unconditionally restored to duty after the amputation of a leg as a result of an injury sustained during one of the rescue operations. Brashear retired on April 1, 1979, after 31 years of service.
