Short description
Urban horticulturalist Brontë Mitchell has her eye on a gorgeous apartment, but the building's board will rent it only to a married couple. Georges Fauré, a waiter from France whose visa is expiring, needs to marry an American woman to stay in the country. Their marriage of convenience turns into a burden when they must live together to allay the suspicions of the immigration service, as the polar opposites grate on each other's nerves.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The lead actress, Andie MacDowell, was very surprised when director Peter Weir asked her to gain weight for filming. Up until that point, directors had always asked her to lose weight.
  • This is an Australian film, funded by Australian money, but without any actors from Australia, and filming did not take place in Australia. Only the director, Peter Weir, who was also the screenwriter and producer, and cinematographer Jeffrey Simpson, as well as some other members of the film's creative team, were Australian. Post-production also took place in Australia.
  • Peter Weir originally wrote the screenplay himself, based on an old story, and he wrote it specifically for Gérard Depardieu, as he saw only that actor in the lead role. He kept a photograph of Depardieu handy while typing the screenplay on a typewriter.
