The lead actress, Andie MacDowell, was very surprised when director Peter Weir asked her to gain weight for filming. Up until that point, directors had always asked her to lose weight.
This is an Australian film, funded by Australian money, but without any actors from Australia, and filming did not take place in Australia. Only the director, Peter Weir, who was also the screenwriter and producer, and cinematographer Jeffrey Simpson, as well as some other members of the film's creative team, were Australian. Post-production also took place in Australia.
Peter Weir originally wrote the screenplay himself, based on an old story, and he wrote it specifically for Gérard Depardieu, as he saw only that actor in the lead role. He kept a photograph of Depardieu handy while typing the screenplay on a typewriter.
