Initially, the producers wanted to cast an unknown actor as General Newton, but when Burt Reynolds, a longtime fan of the television series, asked for a role in the film, they couldn't refuse the famous actor.
When the film aired on the American television channel NBC in 2000, the scene in which Mr. Bean shows the middle finger was replaced with another scene where the character orders a hot dog with all possible toppings. At the moment David is about to photograph his friend, Mr. Bean's gaze freezes on the huge hot dog with disgust.
"Mr. Bean" was the first film to gross over $100 million worldwide before its American premiere.
Steve Martin, also a big fan of the TV series, wanted to play the role of David Langley.
