The role of Joshua Peters was initially intended for Will Smith, but due to delays with filming the sports drama "Ali" (2001), he was unable to participate in the project, and director Jonathan Demme (1944-2017) gave the role to Mark Wahlberg. Thus, Demme's dream of directing a duet between Smith and Thandiwe Newton, which he had cherished since seeing Stanley Donen's romantic detective story "Charade" (1963), did not come to fruition.
