The film is based on the works of Carolyn Keene (a collective pseudonym under which over forty books about Nancy Drew have been written since 1930).
Nancy's dress, which she wore to the Birthday party, caused a lot of trouble. It wrinkled almost with every movement. 10 identical dresses were needed to film the scene.
Nancy Drew is 17 years old in the film – 17 candles can be seen on the cake in the birthday scene.
Nancy Drew, aged 16-17, drives a car, as in the state of California you can get a driver's license at 16 (having obtained a learner's permit with parental consent six months prior, requiring 50 hours of practice).
The number of people changes dramatically in the bomb disposal scene: when Nancy runs to the hatch, there are many pedestrians in the frame, and a moment later, when she runs back and the bomb explodes, only she and one Chinese man are visible.
